It was at a trade fair in Los Angeles, California. We were presenting a new top model as its American premiere, one that sounded more detailed than anything that had existed before.
Unexpectedly, an old customer appeared at the stand, someone with whom I had and still have a long-standing friendship: the famous recording engineer, producer, and book author in the jazz genre, Dr. Jim Merod. After a warm greeting, he took me aside and told me that he had brought the finished recording of his newest album with him and asked whether I would like to listen to it. Of course I agreed, so he took out his equipment and I prepared to connect our new model. When he asked what kind of device it was, I told him that according to previous test reports from Japan it was the most highly resolving headphone currently on the market. Interested and nodding his head, he plugged in the device and I put it on. He started the playback—but after three seconds I took the headphones off again.
He was very surprised, but when I told him that he should go back to the studio to remaster it, he could hardly believe it. “Even before the music begins, there is a high-frequency interference noise audible in the recording,” I explained further, and he shook his head and took the headphones from my hand to listen for himself.
Things then happened very quickly. I had just saved him 200,000 USD by preventing the presentation of an imperfect album. He then wanted to do the remastering with our trade fair unit, which I declined because we still needed it at the exhibition.
But the solution was quickly found. Jim picked up the headphones after the exhibition closed, worked on his recording throughout the night, and returned them the next morning full of gratitude. It is probably unnecessary to mention that he later bought these headphones and remains a loyal ULTRASONE fan to this day.
