Yes—even for absolute music lovers or audio enthusiasts—there are situations where using headphones or earphones is not advisable.
One obvious area is safety-related situations, such as in traffic. When driving a car, cycling, or walking in busy areas, hearing traffic signals and vehicle sounds is important. In many places, using headphones in such situations is discouraged or even prohibited.
Headphones can also be problematic when you need to hear announcements or warnings, for example in public spaces, or during meetings or conversations with colleagues where communication could otherwise be missed or disrupted.
During sports or near potential hazards—such as jogging or cycling outdoors—it is also important to remain aware of your surroundings.
And this list could easily be extended much further.
My opinion on this:
There are many situations in which using headphones or in-ear monitors (IEMs) simply does not make sense.
But an even more important question is this: Do we really want to be surrounded by sound all the time, or should we occasionally give our ears a break?
I have personally tried running while listening to music, and I found it terrible. Not only does the rhythm of the music rarely match the rhythm of your steps—which changes depending on the terrain—but even worse, I felt that I was no longer truly present in nature. It was simply passing by without me experiencing it.
If I am outside enjoying nature, then I want to experience it with my ears as well—not distracted or isolated by music, audiobooks, podcasts, or silence created by headphones.
Personally, I never do that anymore. Not while walking, not while running, and certainly not while cycling.
Indoor fitness is different, of course. But outdoors—please—enjoy your surroundings.
And it does not matter whether the device says Apple, Bose, or ULTRASONE.
When you are in nature, the rule is simple: without headphones is the way to go. 🌿🎧
