Why Some Headphones Feel Uncomfortable – And How Design Can Fix It

Many people perceive headphones as too heavy, uncomfortable, or both. Alongside sound-related weaknesses—such as the absence of technologies like S-Logic, which provide a more natural and hearing-friendly sound—comfort issues are one of the most common reasons people reject headphones altogether.

In many cases, the geometry of the headband itself is not the real problem. Instead, the issue lies in how the padding interacts with the shape of the human head.

The Sensitive Area on the Top of the Head

A particularly sensitive point for many people is the top center of the skull.

In infancy, this region is known as the fontanelle, the soft spot where skull bones have not yet fully fused. In adults, the fontanelle is completely closed and ossified. However, the crown area of the head (vertex) often remains more sensitive to pressure.

This sensitivity is especially noticeable in people with:

  • Thin hair or bald heads

  • Sensitive scalp tissue

  • Long listening sessions with constant pressure from a headband

A traditional headphone headband that rests directly and evenly on the crown of the head can therefore become uncomfortable over time and may even cause headaches.

Why a Headband Cutout Improves Comfort

Designing a headband with a relief or cutout in the central pressure zone can significantly improve wearing comfort.

The benefits include:

  • Reduced pressure on the center of the skull, where the weight would otherwise concentrate

  • Better weight distribution toward the sides or better-padded areas

  • Less heat buildup and friction in a sensitive region

  • Improved comfort for bald users or those with sensitive scalps

This concept is similar to ergonomic bicycle saddles with a pressure-relief channel, which reduce pressure in sensitive anatomical areas.

ULTRASONE FGC Technology

At ULTRASONE, this challenge is addressed through our FGC (Force Gauge Control) technology.

FGC is specifically designed to relieve pressure on the most sensitive areas of the head and distribute the headphone’s weight more effectively. As a result, all ULTRASONE Signature models offer significantly improved comfort during long listening sessions.

Compared to many competitors—such as the Apple AirPods Max, which lack such structural pressure relief and rely mainly on conventional padding—this design can make a noticeable difference in long-term wearability.

With improved ergonomics, extended listening sessions become far more enjoyable.

My Perspective

It is always fascinating to see how few people are actually familiar with the structure of their own head.

Even the term “fontanelle” is unfamiliar to many people. And even fewer have taken the time to explore the shape of their own skull. If you gently feel the top of your head, you can usually detect the slightly raised central area that I jokingly refer to as “the horn.”

The latest ULTRASONE Signature models have already received a great deal of positive feedback for their FGC comfort design.

And looking ahead, all future ULTRASONE models will incorporate this innovation, ensuring that listening to music becomes even more comfortable and enjoyable.
