The choice between passive and active noise cancelling (ANC) in headphones depends on several factors, including your specific needs, your budget, and the environments in which you plan to use the headphones.
Passive noise cancelling blocks environmental noise through the physical structure of the headphones themselves. This is usually achieved through materials that absorb sound and through a design that encloses the ears or fits into the ear canal.
No battery is required, and the devices can be used at any time.
However, the noise cancelling is often less effective at isolating variable or low-frequency noises such as conversations or engine sounds.
Active noise cancelling headphones use microphones that capture external noise and then generate an opposite-phase sound wave to neutralize those sounds.
This is very effective at reducing low-frequency noises such as the droning sound in airplanes or trains and can provide a clearer audio experience in noisy environments.
However, they require batteries or another power source to operate the active noise cancelling and may cause a feeling of pressure in the ear for some users.
If you want to work or relax in particularly noisy environments such as public transport or airplanes, headphones with active noise cancelling may be the better choice. However, if you are mostly in quieter environments, passive noise-cancelling headphones may be sufficient.
It should also be noted that many high-quality headphones today offer both active and passive noise reduction in order to combine the advantages of both technologies.
My opinion on this:
If a headphone has well-designed passive isolation, such as the ULTRASONE models in the closed Founders Series, it can certainly replace active noise cancelling. I see the major advantage of the passive concept in the unaltered reproduction of music—a point that electronic systems rarely achieve perfectly. Even though ANC in the Apple AirPods Max is groundbreaking, I would still recommend comparing both approaches first.
