Apps for headphones can certainly be useful, but their benefits often depend on the specific functionality. Here are some of the features and how they can be useful:
Sound personalization: Many apps allow you to adjust the sound of your headphones according to your personal preferences. This can be done through equalizer settings or special presets for different music styles. This can improve the listening experience if you want to hear your music the way you like it best.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) control: For headphones with active noise cancellation, different ANC modes can be activated or adjusted via the app. This can be particularly helpful to selectively reduce or allow environmental noise depending on where you are.
Firmware updates: Some apps provide firmware updates for headphones. These updates can add new features, fix bugs, or improve performance.
Custom controls: Apps may allow you to customize the control elements of the headphones (such as buttons for volume or playback). This can increase usability.
Find My Headphones: Some apps offer a function that helps locate lost headphones.
Apps for headphones can provide more or less important improvements. However, it is important to realize that not every app offers truly useful features for every headphone. Sometimes certain functions may simply be marketing strategies without a significant real-world benefit.
My opinion on this:
At ULTRASONE, we considered for a long time whether we should develop an app for our wireless models or not. In the end, we decided against it, because we are already convinced of the sound quality of our products as they are, something that is repeatedly confirmed by test reports. We also find it unnecessary to constantly operate a phone when things can be done quickly and easily directly on the headphones. In my opinion, customizing controls is more of an unnecessary gimmick if the headphones are designed sensibly. Firmware updates are really the only feature that truly makes sense to keep products up to date in the long term. However, hardware development moves so quickly that this often does not provide a significant advantage.
Apple is the only company that has solved this particularly well with the integration of its AirPods products, creating a user experience that stands out.
The game changes again when apps begin to become intelligent, as Sony is currently demonstrating first.
