Whether True Wireless Stereo (TWS) in-ear headphones or over-ear headphones sound better depends on many different factors.

Over-ear headphones typically offer fuller and more powerful bass reproduction due to their larger drivers. The larger drivers and the over-ear design allow for better reproduction of low frequencies and often provide a more detailed overall sound profile. TWS in-ears, even higher-end models, often cannot deliver the same bass performance because their design is limited to smaller drivers and a more compact housing.

Because over-ear headphones completely surround the ear, they can often create a wider and more immersive soundstage. This is particularly advantageous for music genres that benefit from spatial presentation (such as classical or jazz) and for movies. TWS in-ears have a smaller soundstage that focuses more on direct sound reproduction, which limits the spatial impression compared to over-ear headphones.

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology is available in both TWS in-ears and over-ear headphones, but over-ear models usually perform better in this area. Thanks to the larger housing and the additional passive isolation created by enclosing the ear, over-ear headphones can reduce external noise more effectively, whereas TWS in-ears are usually less effective at noise suppression despite having ANC.

TWS in-ears are often more convenient for travel and sports due to their small size and wireless connectivity. They are more compact and easier to carry. Over-ear headphones, on the other hand, are often heavier and less portable but offer greater comfort for long listening sessions and are less fatiguing since they do not sit inside the ear.

For audiophile users and those who prefer the highest sound quality, spatial depth, and strong bass, over-ear headphones provide the better sound quality. However, TWS in-ears are ideal for users who value mobility and compactness, and thanks to advancing technology they also offer good sound quality that is more than sufficient for many listeners.

My opinion on this:

After testing countless TWS systems and realizing that—except for our LAPIS—they almost never meet my expectations in terms of sound quality, I much prefer listening with over-ear headphones.

Since I don’t exercise with music anyway—which for me is the only real use case for TWS—I’m happy to accept carrying a bit more weight and volume in exchange for good sound and good ANC.

After also listening to both Apple products—the AirPods PRO and Max—my opinion has only become stronger.

The noise cancelling on the larger model is worlds better, they last longer, and they sound better.
