Cheap headphones are generally not sustainable; in most cases, such products contradict the principles of sustainability.
Low-cost products often contain inferior plastics or heavy metals that can be harmful to the environment. Low prices are frequently made possible by inexpensive production in countries with lower wage levels and weaker labor protection standards. This is rarely compatible with social sustainability.
Cheap headphones are often less robust and have a shorter lifespan, which leads to more electronic waste.
Sustainable products offer repair options, which are often missing from low-cost alternatives.
Bargain products are usually manufactured at the expense of the environment and working conditions. Anyone who prioritizes sustainability should opt for durable, repairable products made from environmentally friendly materials and produced under fair conditions—even if they are somewhat more expensive.
How does Apple approach sustainability with its products? In the field of electronic products, Apple does deserve some praise when it comes to repairability at acceptable prices. However, there are recurring conflicts between retailers and Apple that are often resolved at the expense of customers. This is unfortunate and frustrating for the brand.
My opinion on this:
The warranty period at Apple is too short, and in terms of sustainability there is a recurring problem:
Products that are treated carefully and last a long time eventually fall out of software support, making them either unusable or vulnerable to security gaps that are no longer fixed. From a sustainability perspective, this must change.
At ULTRASONE, we have always carried out repairs and kept spare parts available for a long time. Of course, there are also parts that are no longer available for our products, but we can still repair headphones that are over 20 years old—something that is almost unique in the market.
That is sustainability in practice!
