Product Updates: Continuous Model Refinement vs. New Generations

Ultrasone typically keeps its headphone models on the market for many years with very few visible changes. Instead of frequently replacing products, the company focuses on continuous model refinement during the product’s lifecycle.

These improvements often happen quietly in the background and may include:

  • Improved materials

  • Adjustments to internal foams

  • Optimized cables

  • Quieter mechanical components

  • Updated carrying cases

  • Adjusted cable lengths

  • Small ergonomic improvements

These kinds of refinements gradually improve the product without requiring customers to purchase a completely new model.

How Apple Handles Product Updates

The strategy of Apple is quite different. Apple is known for following a clear generational product strategy. Instead of continuously refining existing models over many years, Apple typically introduces entirely new product generationsthat replace previous versions.

However, there are some exceptions, especially with devices that have longer product lifecycles.

This approach means that older models are regularly replaced rather than gradually improved, and customers are frequently introduced to new generations of the same product category.

Examples include:

  • iPhones, which are typically released every year with updated components or new designs.

  • AirPods and Beats headphones, where earlier generations are usually replaced by new models rather than receiving incremental upgrades.

  • MacBooks, which tend to have longer update cycles but are still replaced with new generations rather than refined over time.

What This Means for Customers

Apple’s strategy has several consequences for customers.

On the positive side, buyers know that Apple devices often represent a long-term investment in a well-integrated ecosystem. However, the rapid pace of product generations also means that a device can feel outdated relatively quickly.

Some common issues customers experience include:

  • Older products receiving limited software support. For example, many iPhones typically receive major updates for about five to six years.

  • Existing devices cannot usually be upgraded through small improvements—for example, AirPods batteries cannot be replaced in a practical way.

  • When a new generation is released, users often need to purchase a completely new device to benefit from improvements.

  • In some cases, “new generations” introduce only minor changes, which can make the upgrade feel less substantial.

Environmental Impact

Frequent generational changes can also raise questions about environmental sustainability.

If devices cannot easily be repaired or upgraded, users may replace them sooner—even if the existing product still works perfectly. This can increase electronic waste and shorten product lifecycles.

Companies that emphasize long product lifespans, repairability, and incremental improvements can therefore contribute to more sustainable consumption.

My Perspective

I am personally an Apple user, and I have often been frustrated that many excellent devices stop receiving support even though they still function perfectly.

For customers, this is disappointing—even though in some cases technological progress makes longer support difficult.

Other issues, such as changes to Lightning connector pin assignments or software updates that prevent accessories from working, are difficult to justify and should not happen.

At Ultrasone, our products are based almost entirely on mechanical and acoustic technologies. This allows us to continuously refine our models throughout their lifespan.

An additional advantage is that when customers send their headphones in for repair or service, many of these refinements can often be implemented in older models as well.

This means that improvements developed over time can also benefit earlier versions of a product.

For the enjoyment of our customers—and for the long, sustainable life of their headphones.
