The sound quality of the Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter is good within its limits—very good even, considering its price and intended use. But that is where the positive news largely ends.
The adapter includes an integrated DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) that operates at 24-bit / 48 kHz, which corresponds to the maximum audio quality Apple officially supports for mobile devices. The output impedance is extremely low (below 1 ohm), making it particularly suitable for in-ear headphones. As a result, there is very little sound coloration caused by headphone impedance.
However, the adapter is not particularly powerful. It performs well with typical headphones and in-ears, but it struggles with high-impedance studio headphones or planar magnetic models, which require significantly more power.
Its compact size and very low price remain its strongest advantages.
The Limits of the Apple Adapter
While the Apple dongle works well for everyday listening, it is technically limited. High-quality DACs support High-Resolution Audio well beyond 48 kHz. For example, our NAOS DAC supports 384 kHz at 32-bit resolution, delivering far greater detail and dynamic range.
In addition, advanced DACs often support DSD playback, a format favored by many audiophiles for its natural and highly detailed sound reproduction.
Another key difference is output power. Compact audiophile DACs are significantly more powerful than the Apple adapter. With the NAOS, for instance, two listeners can enjoy music simultaneously without sacrificing performance.
The Advantage of a 4.4 mm Balanced Output
The most important difference, however, is the 4.4 mm balanced headphone output and the fully balanced hardware architecture behind it.
Balanced audio designs provide several advantages:
Improved channel separation
Reduced electrical noise
Greater output power
More precise and dynamic sound reproduction
For serious music listeners, these improvements can make a substantial difference in overall listening experience.
Why Balanced DACs Are Worth It
The answer is therefore a clear yes: a DAC with a 4.4 mm balanced output is a must-have for music enthusiasts. Without it, the listening experience simply lacks a significant part of its potential.
My Perspective
In my opinion, nothing compares to balanced audio through a 4.4 mm connector.
For our new DAC, we designed the entire internal architecture as a fully balanced system to achieve the best possible sound performance. While the 4.4 mm socket may make the device slightly less minimalist in appearance, it is simply essential for delivering the highest audio quality.
