Continuous Model Refinement vs. Fixed Product Generations

Ultrasone continuously improves its products during their time on the market. This approach is known as ongoing model refinement. Instead of waiting for a completely new generation, small improvements are gradually implemented to enhance the product.

In contrast, Apple generally does not introduce visible hardware changes during the lifecycle of a headphone model. Products typically remain unchanged until a successor model is released.

However, Apple does maintain its headphones in other ways during their lifecycle.

How Apple Maintains Its Headphones

Even though the hardware remains largely the same, Apple performs several types of product maintenance and improvements.

Firmware Updates

Apple regularly releases firmware updates for products such as:

  • Apple AirPods

  • Apple AirPods Pro

  • Apple AirPods Max

These updates may:

  • Fix bugs

  • Improve sound processing

  • Introduce new features such as Adaptive Audio

  • Enhance noise cancelling performance

New Features via iOS Updates

Some new features become available through updates to the operating system itself.

For example, updates to iOS have enabled features such as:

  • Spatial Audio

  • Automatic device switching between Apple devices

  • New gesture or interaction controls

Minor Manufacturing Adjustments

Apple occasionally makes small internal production adjustments during a product’s lifecycle—such as revised serial number structures or minor manufacturing optimizations.

However, these changes are usually not officially announced, and the product itself remains technically the same from a user perspective.

In practice, this means that hardware improvements during the product lifecycle are rare in Apple’s strategy.

Continuous Refinement at ULTRASONE

The approach at Ultrasone is quite different.

Take the Edition 8 EX as an example. Over the course of its time on the market, several improvements were gradually introduced:

  • Improved headband damping

  • Updated headband padding

  • Refined ear pads and ear pad foam

  • Variations in the earcup surface finish

  • Improved connection cable

  • Adjusted earcup ventilation

  • Internal wiring upgraded to silver-plated cables

  • More environmentally friendly packaging materials

  • Slight refinements in the sound tuning to reflect changing listening preferences

Despite these updates, the product remained the same Edition 8 EX that customers know.

The Philosophy of Continuous Improvement

This strategy is applied to many ULTRASONE models.

Continuous model refinement allows products to improve steadily without causing confusion or disruption in the market. Customers benefit from ongoing improvements while the product identity remains consistent.

My Perspective

Designing a headphone that remains completely unchanged for many years can be problematic, because customer expectations and listening habits evolve over time.

When we develop improvements, we want existing models to benefit from them as well, keeping them technically up to date.

A good example is the headband damping system.

This is an almost invisible change, but it significantly reduces mechanical noise when moving or shaking the headphone. We introduced this improvement across our luxury models.

Changes like this are rarely announced publicly. However, if you compare an early version of a model with a later production version, you will often discover considerable refinements.

At Ultrasone, quiet improvements behind the scenes are simply part of building better headphones over time. 🎧
