What’s new in the headphone market? And why are prices falling?

Apple has introduced the AirPods 4, which offer features previously found in the more expensive AirPods Pro 2, including active noise cancellation, but at a lower price. The AirPods 4 are available in two versions: a standard version for €149 and a version with active noise cancellation for €199.

Dyson has introduced a new headphone model called the OnTrac, which represents a further development of the Dyson Zone. The OnTrac weighs 450 grams and features a clever weight distribution through two batteries integrated into the headband, which—together with soft microfiber ear cushions—is designed to provide high wearing comfort. Dyson also offers interchangeable ear cushions and end caps in different colors, similar to Nokia’s interchangeable phone covers in the past. The headphones cost €499, while the accessory sets are priced at €49 each.

The Sennheiser Momentum 4, known for its excellent sound quality and effective noise cancellation, is currently available on Amazon with a discount of almost 50%.

Although a successor model already exists, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is still considered one of the best over-ear headphones with active noise cancellation. For Black Friday, the price dropped to below €200.

My opinion on this:

Apple and Sony apparently realize that the innovations in their new devices are not attracting as much interest as they had hoped. A price reduction of 50%—as also seen with Sennheiser—is a major disappointment for customers who purchased the product at the full price. Of course, companies can do this, but more and more customers will then simply wait for new models to be released and buy the slightly inferior predecessor models instead. Or they wait in general for brand promotions, which appear regularly anyway.
