Premium Brands Use Packaging as Part of the Experience

Leading brands such as Apple, Sony, and Bose carefully design their packaging to reinforce a premium brand experience.

The packaging is not only functional but also emotional. A thoughtfully designed box can create a sense of anticipation and excitement before the product is even used.

Another important aspect is practicality. Buyers want to ensure that all expected components are included, such as:

  • cables

  • adapters

  • carrying cases

High-quality packaging also protects sensitive components and helps prevent damage during transport.

The Rise of Unboxing Culture

For technology enthusiasts, influencers, and especially YouTubers, the unboxing moment has become a form of entertainment.

There are entire YouTube channels with millions of followers dedicated solely to unboxing products rather than reviewing them in detail.

A visually appealing unboxing can:

  • increase excitement about a purchase

  • strengthen the emotional value of the product

  • make the product feel more premium

But why does unboxing still play such an important role?

Some psychologists suggest that the fascination with unpacking products may be linked to early childhood experiences, such as opening gifts on birthdays or holidays. These moments create strong emotional associations that may still influence consumer behavior later in life.

Is Unboxing Important in Every Culture?

Another interesting question is whether the importance of the unboxing experience varies across cultures.

In many cases, consumer trends in Asian markets set new directions for global product design. Recently, we received feedback from partners in Asia recommending a significant change to our packaging approach.

Instead of elaborate red-and-black premium packaging, they suggested switching to a simple brown cardboard boxfor all professional products.

Why Simpler Packaging Is Becoming the New Standard

The reasoning behind this change is surprisingly practical.

First, elaborate packaging no longer carries the same perceived value it once did. Many customers now see the outer box simply as transport packaging rather than a long-term storage solution.

Second, environmental considerations are becoming more important. A simpler box offers several advantages:

  • less material usage

  • reduced weight

  • smaller transport volume

  • lower CO₂ footprint during shipping

Since the actual headphone is already protected inside the Signature carry case, the outer packaging does not need to be oversized or heavily printed to provide additional protection.

Sustainability Is Changing Packaging Design

Reducing unnecessary printing, dyes, and oversized packaging is becoming part of a broader sustainability movement in consumer electronics.

A simpler brown cardboard box may look less spectacular, but it contributes to:

  • reduced environmental impact

  • more efficient logistics

  • less packaging waste

In today’s market, sustainability increasingly outweighs decorative packaging.

My Personal View

If the product itself is already protected inside a proper case, overly elaborate packaging becomes an unnecessary environmental burden.

Ultimately, what really matters is the product itself—and that is only revealed after opening the carry case.

The outer packaging is rarely used again and usually ends up being discarded. For that reason, it should be designed as efficiently as possible, using minimal material while still protecting the contents.

In the past, we created beautifully designed packaging with a great deal of attention to detail. However, the market has clearly asked for the new simple brown boxes, which made the decision much easier for us—even if they may appear less visually appealing.

But don’t be misled by the box.

What truly matters is what’s inside.
