I am always amazed at the heavyweight headphones that appear on the market. The Audeze LCD-4, for example, currently weighs about 640 grams, making it one of the heaviest headphones available. But what does that actually mean for you as a user?

There is no universal medical guideline that defines a specific maximum weight for headphones. However, there are recommendations related to wearing comfort and strain on the neck and head.

Heavier headphones can place additional pressure on the head, neck, and shoulders over long periods, which may lead to tension or pain. This is particularly relevant for people who are prone to neck discomfort or who already have issues in that area.

For this reason, lighter headphones (under 300 grams) are often considered more comfortable and ergonomic because they reduce pressure on the head and neck. For extended use—such as working, gaming, or long listening sessions—lighter models are generally recommended.

While there is no strict medical limit, headphones weighing more than 400 grams are typically regarded as uncomfortable for longer listening sessions. For everyday use, models under 300 grams are often the most practical.

In recent market trends, weight is finally becoming an important factor again, which can be seen in newer models from companies like Bose and Sony.

Nevertheless, in the high-end segment, the trend toward planar magnetic drivers continues. These drivers inherently make headphones heavier without necessarily improving sound quality in every case.

And even without planar magnetic drivers, weight can still be high. The Focal Utopia, for example, weighs around 490 grams, despite using carbon components and relatively small 40 mm drivers.

My opinion on this:

A good pair of headphones should not only be comfortable—it should also be lightweight. Even 400 grams already feels heavy to me.

Our products often surprise people, especially in the luxury segment, because of their low weight. This makes listening much more enjoyable. Alongside the right sound and the absence of listening fatigue through S-Logic, ergonomics—and especially weight—play a decisive role.

So my advice is simple:
Make it easy on yourself. 🎧
