Many years ago at a music trade show in the United States, we presented a new high-end headphone that delivered a level of precision and sharpness in playback that had never been heard before. This headphone later became the forefather of all professional headphones in today’s Signature series and even at that time impressed listeners with its sound—surpassing competitors such as Audio-Technica.

Even back then, with this headphone—just like today with a Signature MASTER MkII—you could hear details in recordings that would otherwise remain unnoticed: studio doors being opened during a recording session, people quietly talking in the background, interference noises, and much more.
At that trade show, Jim Merod, a genius and world-renowned figure in jazz music, came to our booth. Of course we immediately recognized each other, because a few years earlier Jim had invited me to a live recording session in a bar in New York. After a warm greeting, Jim presented the master of his new album, which was scheduled to go into production the following day. He asked me to listen to it and give him feedback—which I was happy to do.
The listening lasted exactly three seconds. Then I took the headphones off.
From his puzzled and somewhat horrified expression, I could tell he had no idea what was wrong. I said, “Jim, please—go back into the studio and remaster the recording. Before the music even begins, there is a high-frequency interference noise on the track.”
He listened to it again and immediately asked what kind of incredible headphones those were. He needed them—and right away. Unfortunately, we only had those two prototypes with us at the show, so I couldn’t give him one. But to help, I offered him the chance to take the headphones with him after the show closed and remaster the recording overnight—so that the Edition 9 would be back at the booth the next morning.
Jim gladly accepted and stayed at the booth for the next two hours, listening to everything he had with him in his bag.
The next morning he returned, happy, and handed back the headphones with the words:
“Michael, you just saved me $200,000 on a ruined recording. May I invite you to my home?”
