For companies like ULTRASONE, there can be many advantages to remaining small and specialized rather than expanding rapidly.
Why we are not expanding as quickly as Austrian Audio—which emerged from the former AKG team after AKG was acquired by Harman and has grown rapidly since—can be explained quite simply. As a small company, we can react very quickly to changes in demand or to new trends because our structures are less complex. Decisions can be made faster, which is a major advantage in dynamic markets.
In a small company, it is easier to build personal relationships with customers who often expect an individual and tailored experience. Companies that remain small but refined can serve niche markets and build strong relationships with specialized customers who are often willing to pay higher prices for exclusive quality.
Smaller companies have lower administrative costs and fewer bureaucratic hurdles. This allows them to operate more efficiently and maintain better control over their expenses. Since they usually do not have large hierarchies, resources can be used more effectively and unnecessary costs can be avoided.
Small companies often provide an inspiring and closer working environment in which employees can have a more direct influence on the company and its development. Many professionals—especially talented individuals in creative or technical fields—value the direct impact and personal responsibility that smaller organizations can offer.
By focusing on specialization and quality, small companies can position their brand as unique and exclusive. They can differentiate themselves from larger competitors through their history, values, and a clear commitment to quality and authenticity, building a loyal audience that appreciates this distinction.
Smaller companies are also closer to their customers and can therefore respond more quickly and directly to feedback. This proximity enables continuous adjustment and improvement of products and services, helping to secure a stable position in the market over the long term.
Overall, the “small but refined” model offers many advantages that help companies remain competitive in a challenging market while building a more loyal and specialized customer base.
My opinion on this:
Of the many different approaches we have pursued over the past 30 years, I like our current one the most by far. We are a compact team equipped with enormous know-how from decades of market and product development, and we carefully observe what is happening in the market—deciding where we want to participate and where we do not.
Thanks to this compact structure, we can also afford not to follow every trend and instead remain true to our company philosophy. There may not be a huge number of them, but those who have trusted us for years know:
