People are creatures of habit. Is that the secret to the Beyerdynamic DT 770’s success?

You hear it again and again and never quite understand it—but it is entirely possible to become so accustomed to a particular pair of headphones that you reject newer and possibly technically superior alternatives.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 is a good example of this. It has been on the market for decades in virtually unchanged form and can be seen everywhere.

After years of use, it simply feels “right.” The fit or weight may be perfect for the wearer, so switching to another model can feel uncomfortable. Every pair of headphones also has its own sound signature. Even if newer models objectively sound better, they may feel “wrong” or unfamiliar because the listener has become used to the sound of their current model.

Some people remain loyal to a brand or model out of habit or loyalty, even when alternatives exist. And just because something is described as more modern or technologically superior does not necessarily mean it is better for the user. Many people consider the familiar sound to be optimal and see no real benefit in new features. A more modern headphone with extended dynamics or a more balanced frequency response may be technically superior but might not match the individual listener’s taste. The sound of the familiar model may simply be preferred.

In addition, new headphones often require a period of adjustment, especially when the sound signature or operation differs. Some people prefer to avoid this effort altogether.

My opinion on this:

I have experienced this many times myself. In direct comparison, our ULTRASONE Signature PURE—or previously the PRO 780i—performs extremely well against the old competitor. But the willingness to switch is often limited. You may hear comments such as “it sounds unusual” or “I have to position it more carefully.” All of that may be true, but getting used to better and healthier listening usually takes only about an hour. And after some time, the attachment to our S-Logic technology becomes so strong that other brands are no longer even considered.

So be careful: once you are captured by our unique sound signature, it usually means staying for good! 🎧
