Of course, during the so-called “stade Zeit” — the supposedly quiet time before Christmas — many thoughts come to mind: what one could have done differently, whom one may have disappointed or pleased, whom one gave opportunities to, where one may not have been strict enough, who helped move things forward, who was simply a waste of time, and who truly betrayed one.
Many names have remained in my memory, but there is one incident from the past that I would like to highlight, because to this day it still makes me shake my head. I would never have expected such an intense level of hatred and desire for revenge from any person in the world — and yet I experienced it twice.
I will not mention names or companies here, but the story is unfortunately true, and no — it has nothing to do with BOSE.
Never in my life have I been as disappointed as by the only man who, besides myself, has ever been CEO of ULTRASONE. Within just 18 months he managed to turn a flourishing company into a restructuring case. He did so with the active support of three distributors to whom he sold large quantities of products, apparently without caring whether the pricing would allow any real profit.
I terminated his position just in time and reached a settlement with him. Afterwards, however, he plotted revenge together with a friend of his — one of the three distributors — who had also been terminated because our company was no longer making any profit with his distribution. Prices and costs had simply become uneconomical, and so we initially parted ways peacefully.
Afterwards, the distributor and his management team lured several of our employees away and flooded us with lawsuits. During the negotiations for the buyback of the remaining stock, he used a biased expert report in which empty headphone boxes and boxes containing damaged and used headphones were sold back to us as if they were new. A joint inspection of the goods was therefore deliberately avoided. Instead, he chose the path of litigation and carried out his fraud in this way.
Such behavior is deeply contemptible and will not be forgiven by me. But it has only made us stronger.
People can have different opinions, they can discuss and even argue — but it must always lead to a clean and fair outcome.
Anyone who ignores that will sooner or later lose.
