Why Our Ears Seem to Grow With Age – And What That Means for Headphone Design

Over the course of a long life, most people hardly notice it. Yet certain parts of the human body tend to appear larger with age—and one of the most visible examples is the ears.

As people grow older, their ears often seem to become bigger. This effect is mainly caused by two biological factors: changes in connective tissue and cartilage, and the influence of gravity.

According to medical explanations, connective tissue gradually loses elasticity over time. As the skin’s tension decreases, the ears may appear longer and slightly more relaxed in shape. At the same time, the cartilage structure of the ear can continue to grow slowly throughout life.

In addition, gravity contributes to this visual change. Over the years, the combination of reduced tissue elasticity and constant downward pull can cause the ears to appear larger. This phenomenon affects both men and women, although studies suggest that the increase in size can sometimes be more pronounced in men.

What Does This Mean for Headphone Manufacturers?

At first glance, this might seem like an interesting biological detail—but it also has practical implications for industries such as headphone design.

Many Hi-Fi enthusiasts belong to age groups that have been passionate about audio technology for decades. As these listeners grow older, comfort becomes increasingly important.

For headphone manufacturers like Denon or ULTRASONE, this means that products must continue to provide sufficient space and ergonomic comfort for a wide range of ear shapes and sizes.

This is one reason why many modern headphones now feature:

  • Larger earcup dimensions

  • More elongated earcup shapes

  • Wider and softer ear pad openings

These changes ensure that headphones remain comfortable for listeners of all ages.

Balancing Comfort and Design

However, increasing the size of headphones presents a design challenge.

Larger earcups may improve comfort, but they can also make it more difficult to maintain an elegant and visually balanced design.

For example, the ULTRASONE Founders Series Closed appears almost compact when compared with some large modern headphones, yet its design remains timeless and refined.

Even the Founders Series Open, with a capsule diameter of around 100 mm, is relatively compact within the high-end headphone segment—while still providing plenty of room for the ear.

A Trend That Works for Different Generations

Interestingly, the current trend toward larger headphones benefits multiple generations of users.

Younger listeners often appreciate larger headphones for their visual presence and bold aesthetic, while older listeners value the additional comfort and space.

In response to these evolving preferences, ULTRASONE has already adapted several models.

For example:

  • The Signature PURE White

  • The Signature FUSION Open Back

Both feature larger inner ear pad diameters, providing improved comfort across a wider range of users.

Future ULTRASONE models will continue to take this trend into account.

My Personal Opinion

Science has now confirmed something I have observed for many years: ears really do appear to grow with age.

Fortunately, today’s design trends work in our favor.

Younger listeners often think “big is beautiful”, while older listeners appreciate the extra comfort that larger headphones provide.

If fashion and functionality continue to move in the same direction, the high-end headphone world should remain both stylish and comfortable for everyone.
