Why Some People Don’t Immediately Understand S-Logic®

Despite many plausible explanations, there are still people who struggle to understand how S-Logic® works. Likewise, not everyone immediately recognizes the difference between conventional headphones and ULTRASONE headphones.

In such cases, there is a simple and reliable demonstration that clearly shows how important the outer ear (pinna) is for spatial hearing.

A Simple Demonstration of How the Outer Ear Works

Hold both hands flat about 2 cm in front of your ears.

At first glance, it may look as if you are simply listening more carefully. In reality, however, something significant happens acoustically: you are blocking a large portion of the outer ear’s ability to receive and shape sound.

The outer ear normally plays a critical role in how we perceive direction, distance, and spatial information. When the hands interfere with this process, the brain suddenly receives altered acoustic signals.

What Happens to Sound Perception

When your hands are positioned in front of your ears, several perceptual changes occur:

1. Changes in distance and directional perception
The hands block or reflect sound waves arriving from the side or at an angle. This alters the balance of sound intensities and frequencies that reach the ear from different directions.

2. Distortion of spatial cues
The brain receives distorted spatial information—similar to what happens with many conventional headphones or in-ear systems that do not incorporate S-Logic® technology. As a result, a sound may appear to come from a different location than it actually does.

3. Reduced vertical localization
The ability to determine whether a sound comes from above or below becomes weaker because the outer ear’s natural filtering is partially disrupted.

4. Increased front–back confusion
The hands modify the natural spectral cues generated by the pinna. This makes it more difficult for the brain to determine whether a sound originates from the front or from behind.

Acoustic Filtering Effects

Your hands also act as a natural acoustic filter.

Lower frequencies pass relatively easily, while higher frequencies are dampened more strongly. As a result, the sound often becomes slightly duller or more hollow, especially for sounds that do not come directly from the front.

Additionally, reflections from the palms can create small echoes or comb-filter effects, caused by interference between the direct sound and reflected sound waves.

This can make certain sounds seem to shift position, appear unstable, or seem to originate from the wrong direction.

How to Try the Demonstration Yourself

The experiment is simple and works almost anywhere.

  1. Sit in a room with music playing or natural environmental sounds.

  2. Hold both hands flat a few centimeters in front of your ears, with the backs of your hands facing outward.

  3. Slowly move your hands forward and backward or slightly farther away from your ears.

You will notice that the entire soundstage changes.

Sounds from the side or behind may suddenly appear less clear or change their perceived location. It can even feel as if you are listening with artificial ears or a different head shape.

What This Demonstration Reveals About Headphones

This simple demonstration illustrates how crucial the outer ear is for natural spatial hearing.

Many conventional headphones bypass or reduce the influence of the outer ear. As a result, they may have an excellent frequency response, yet listening with them can still become fatiguing over time.

ULTRASONE headphones take a different approach. With S-Logic® technology, sound is directed into the outer ear so that the brain receives the spatial cues it naturally expects.

The result is a listening experience with:

  • greater immersion

  • more natural spatial perception

  • improved detail resolution

  • lower required sound pressure levels

  • significantly reduced listening fatigue

My Personal Opinion

I always enjoy demonstrating this simple experiment—especially to curious or even skeptical listeners.

The result is almost always the same.

Conviction rate: 100%.

Anyone who tries it quickly understands why many conventional headphones can measure well yet still lead to listening fatigue. Once people understand the concept behind ULTRASONE and S-Logic®, they rarely want to return to headphones without it.

The combination of immersion, spatial realism, greater detail, lower sound pressure, and reduced listening fatigueconvinces not only professionals who rely on headphones for their work, but virtually everyone who experiences it.

Even sophisticated AI-based spatial simulations—such as those used by Dolby—cannot fully replicate this natural acoustic interaction with the outer ear.
