Natural Spatial Sound: Acoustic Technology vs. Digital Processing

The question of whether natural spatial sound is better achieved through acoustic technologies or electronic signal processing is not easy to answer. The optimal solution often depends on the specific use case, such as music listening, gaming, or immersive media.

Two main approaches dominate the field today:
acoustic spatial technologies, such as ULTRASONE’s S-Logic®, and digital spatial audio systems, such as Dolby Atmos or DTS Headphone:X.

Acoustic Spatial Sound: The Biological Approach

Acoustic spatial technologies focus on how the human ear naturally perceives sound.

One example is S-Logic® technology from ULTRASONE, which positions the headphone drivers slightly offset rather than directly centered toward the ear canal. This allows sound waves to interact more strongly with the outer ear (pinna).

Because the outer ear naturally filters and shapes incoming sound, this approach helps the brain interpret spatial cues more effectively.

Key characteristics of this acoustic approach include:

  • sound interacts with the natural geometry of the ear

  • spatial perception is enhanced without digital manipulation

  • the brain’s natural localization mechanisms are engaged

Another important advantage is that no electronics are required. Since the spatial effect is created purely through physical design, there is:

  • no need for power supply

  • no digital processing latency

  • no risk of technological obsolescence or compatibility issues

Additional benefits include:

  • lower sound pressure at the ear

  • reduced signal intensity requirements

  • long-term listening comfort

Electronic Spatial Audio: DSP-Based Simulation

Digital spatial audio systems use digital signal processing (DSP) to simulate three-dimensional sound environments.

Technologies such as:

  • Dolby Atmos

  • DTS Headphone

  • Sony 360 Reality Audio

attempt to recreate the acoustic behavior of real rooms.

These systems often rely on simulated HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Functions) to reproduce the reflections, delays, and frequency changes that occur when sound interacts with the human head and ears.

In theory, this allows audio systems to generate three-dimensional sound fields.

However, there are some limitations:

  • HRTF models are usually generic averages, not tailored to individual ears

  • digital processing can introduce latency or artifacts

  • the algorithms require computational resources

Because of these characteristics, DSP-based spatial audio is particularly popular in gaming and virtual reality, where simulated sound movement—including vertical positioning—is important.

Which Approach Is Better?

The answer depends largely on how the headphones are used.

For Music Listening

Acoustic technologies such as S-Logic® often provide a more natural spatial impression for music playback. Because the effect relies on physical acoustics rather than artificial processing, the sound can feel more authentic and less manipulated.

For Gaming and Interactive Media

Digital spatial audio systems like Dolby Atmos or DTS Headphone:X may have advantages in gaming environments.

They can simulate complex sound movements in three-dimensional space, including height and dynamic motion, which is valuable in interactive applications.

For Long-Term Listening Comfort

Acoustic solutions generally offer greater listening comfort over long periods, since they rely less on artificial effects and do not require digital signal processing.

My Personal Perspective

Personally, I welcome any attempt to improve spatial perception in headphone listening.

Among electronic solutions, Dolby Atmos is currently one of the most advanced approaches for enhancing depth perception and front localization.

However, when listening carefully, it becomes clear that even Dolby Atmos still reflects its original design for multi-speaker surround systems rather than headphones.

ULTRASONE, on the other hand, has focused exclusively on headphone acoustics from the beginning. Over the years, the S-Logic system has been continuously refined and optimized, and today it is often regarded as an ideal foundation for achieving genuine immersion in headphone listening.

If you want to experience this approach fully, there is only one real recommendation:

Choose the original.
