Visually, the new professional flagship model from Focal looks like a classic consumer headphone, lacking many of the characteristics typically expected from a professional device. It resembles most other Focal products, featuring a slightly modernized headband but otherwise a rather familiar appearance.
What moves it somewhat toward the professional category are the simple packaging, the basic carrying case, and the two included cables. But is that really enough?
When compared with the proven ULTRASONE Signature MASTER MkII, which is offered in a similar price range, several differences immediately stand out:
The ULTRASONE comes with significantly more accessories in the package. A silver-plated 4.4 mm balanced cable is included as standard, along with a high-quality protective case that safely stores the headphones. Advantage: ULTRASONE.
In terms of sound neutrality, even a Focal cannot outshine the ULTRASONE—both perform at a very high level.
Regarding wearing comfort, the ULTRASONE has an advantage of 20 grams less weight, while the Focal offers larger ear pads. The ULTRASONE features the excellent FGC system in the headband padding and has included a ventilated underside for several years now.
For professionals, however, the decisive factor is the ULTRASONE sound concept with the proven S-Logic sound system. Listening fatigue is significantly reduced, sound pressure can be up to 40% lower, and spatial imaging is improved. As a result, professionals not only achieve better results but also benefit from higher working efficiency.
That is what true professional orientation looks like. ULTRASONE has listened and offers a working tool that fully deserves its name in every respect.
My opinion on this:
It is somewhat reminiscent of earlier times. Back then, headphones suddenly became “High-Definition Audio capable,” and even earlier they were marketed as being able to play “Digital Audio.” Today the trend moves toward immersion—which simply does not work properly without S-Logic.
Why do I mention this? Because it is not enough to simply write “Professional” on a pair of headphones. Far more details are required to meet the real needs of professional users. Sustainability and durability are also part of that equation.
The Focal is certainly a great pair of headphones—but a true professional tool it is probably not.
