Hearing What Others Miss – A Personal Experience with Headphones
Over the years, I have listened to many headphones. Many of them—especially those from major brands or models featuring innovative driver technologies—sound beautiful and often look impressive as well.
When these products are supported by extensive marketing, well-designed advertising, responsive websites, and attractive pricing, they naturally become popular and sell very well.
From a business perspective, that makes perfect sense.
From ULTRASONE’s perspective, however, it is somewhat unfortunate—because in reality, our products are designed to deliver the most convincing listening experience.
The Moment When People Hear the Difference
Fortunately, many people recognize this the very first time they listen to ULTRASONE headphones.
I have experienced this many times, but one example stands out particularly clearly.
It happened while listening to a live recording of The Eagles from the Blu-ray of their Farewell Tour. I know this recording extremely well. I not only appreciate the music, but I also attended the concert myself.
That made the experience even more interesting when I listened to it again—this time with full concentration.
Discovering Hidden Details in the Music
At one point in the performance, I suddenly noticed something I had never consciously heard before.
There was a banjo playing.
It wasn’t loud, but it was clearly identifiable and precisely located far to the right side of the stage—provided you were listening through S-Logic® technology.
With my high-end home audio system, I had never noticed it before.
Of course, once you become aware of such details, it becomes easier to hear them again. Still, I decided to listen to the Blu-ray one more time with this discovery in mind.
And sure enough—there really was a banjo player positioned near the right side of the stage exit, somewhat hidden, quietly contributing to the music.
Since then, this particular passage has become part of my standard headphone test routine.
When Even Excellent Headphones Miss the Detail
Interestingly, even very good headphones struggle to reproduce this detail clearly.
For example, even the otherwise excellent Focal headphones fail to present the banjo in such a clearly identifiable and spatially precise way.
Moments like this highlight how important natural spatial reproduction is when listening to music.
More Examples of Hidden Audio Details
Experiences like this are not rare once you begin paying attention.
There are countless examples where ULTRASONE headphones reveal details that are easily overlooked with other systems:
Rod Stewart recordings, where faint whispers can suddenly be heard before a door quietly closes in the background.
The film “Der Schuh des Manitu”, where subtle acoustic details become noticeable that normally pass completely unnoticed.
Numerous other recordings where spatial cues and micro-details emerge with surprising clarity.
Once you start discovering these elements, listening becomes a completely different experience.
My Personal Conclusion
Over the years, we have received an incredible amount of positive feedback from listeners.
Some of the most memorable moments come when grown men sit down, listen carefully—and suddenly have tears in their eyes because they are hearing their favorite music in a completely new way.
Experiences like these remind us again and again of one thing:
We are on the right path. 🎧
