Whether Bluetooth is superior to a cable connection for high-end headphones depends on several factors, including sound quality, usability, flexibility, and the specific requirements of the user. The advantages of wireless devices include freedom from cables and greater mobility, comfort, and the absence of tangled wires. The integration of modern features such as voice assistants or customization options via apps, as well as multi-device connectivity, are also undeniable advantages.

However, there are several specific disadvantages of Bluetooth headphones. First and foremost is sound quality. The audio quality of Bluetooth can be affected by the codecs used and by compression. Although technologies such as aptX HD, LDAC, and AAC improve sound quality, they still cannot compete with the high quality of wired audio. Transmission via Bluetooth can also lead to latency issues, especially when audio and video are played simultaneously. In addition, the constant need to monitor and maintain sufficient battery charge is a limitation in everyday use.

Whether Bluetooth headphones are superior to a wired connection and whether products such as the Focal Utopia or flagship models from brands like Meze or Hifiman should be offered wirelessly depends strongly on individual needs and priorities. For many users, the advantages of Bluetooth headphones in terms of convenience, usability, and modern features are attractive. Audiophiles who prefer the highest sound quality and minimal latency, however, will often prefer wired headphones.

My opinion on this:

In the high-end segment, nothing beats a cable. Anyone who wants to listen audiophilically should even go so far as to consider the type of connection used. For this reason, almost all ULTRASONE models are now prepared for balanced operation and, in many cases, already include the appropriate Pentaconn connection cables in the package.

Provided there is a good DAC, I have not yet heard a wireless product that could even come close to competing with a high-end wired headphone.

And when I have a very good device for enjoying music, then I truly enjoy the music—and the cable does not bother me, because I set up my listening space accordingly. If I want to be mobile, I use a hi-res player for listening.

Therefore, my view is simple: only a cable provides pure enjoyment. The higher the quality, the better. And definitely balanced.
