Leslie Mandoki – Producer, Musician, and Visionary
Leslie Mandoki is widely known as a producer and musician who has worked with internationally acclaimed artists such as No Angels, Lionel Richie, Phil Collins, and Jennifer Rush, as well as on major projects like Disney’s Tarzan and Mulan.
However, his musical journey began much earlier.
The Early Years in Budapest’s Underground Scene
At the age of 20, Mandoki began performing with the band JAM, which played in the early 1970s at the Bem Rakpart Rock Club in Budapest.
At the time, the venue served as a cultural hub for the city’s emerging underground music scene. This environment was shaped by intellectual debate and student resistance against the strict censorship, surveillance, and travel restrictions imposed by the Soviet regime.
Within this climate of artistic resistance, Mandoki developed his early musical identity.
Influences: Progressive Rock Meets Jazz Fusion
Mandoki’s musical style was strongly influenced by the leading British progressive rock bands of the era, including:
Jethro Tull
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Genesis
Yes
Supertramp
These groups were celebrated for their intellectually stimulating lyrics, poetic storytelling, and socially conscious themes, combined with complex compositions, sophisticated harmonies, and innovative production techniques.
At the same time, Mandoki drew inspiration from the New York jazz-rock fusion movement, particularly after Miles Davis’ groundbreaking album Bitches Brew. This movement gave rise to legendary groups such as:
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Return to Forever
The Brecker Brothers
Looking back on his early years with JAM, Mandoki recalls that his goal was always to blend the aesthetic of British progressive rock with the improvisational spirit of American jazz-rock fusion.
The Birth of the Soulmates
In 1993, Mandoki founded the band People, which included many of the musicians who would later become central members of the project. Additional support came from internationally renowned artists such as:
Ian Anderson
Jack Bruce
David Clayton-Thomas (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
Anthony Jackson
Nik Kershaw
The band released its only album that same year, also titled “People.” The recording was further supported by the full horn section of Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Later in 1993, the group was renamed Mandoki Soulmates (also known as Man Doki Soulmates). Their collaboration quickly gained recognition when their debut song “Mother Europe” received the prestigious German television award “Goldene Europa.”
In 1994, the band performed its first major concert at the second annual Sziget / EuroWoodstock Festival in Budapest, playing in front of 40,000 spectators.
A Collective of Legendary Musicians
Over the years, numerous world-class musicians have joined the Mandoki Soulmates project.
Notable additions include:
Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann’s Earth Band)
John Helliwell (Supertramp)
Nick van Eede (Cutting Crew)
Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
The ensemble has also collaborated with outstanding artists such as:
Tony Carey (Rainbow)
Richard Bona
Cory Henry
Steve Lukather (Toto)
Chaka Khan
Prominent German musicians—including Peter Maffay, Klaus Doldinger, and Till Brönner—have also been key contributors to both recordings and live performances for many years.
Working with ULTRASONE
For many years, Mandoki has worked with ULTRASONE headphones in his Red Rock Studio at Lake Starnberg.
He regularly tests new equipment and continues to appreciate the distinctive spatial sound signature and robust construction of ULTRASONE products. Thanks to his extensive experience as a producer and musician, Mandoki is considered one of the important opinion leaders and trusted advisors for the brand.
My Perspective
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed Leslie Mandoki and the Soulmates performing a live concert where every musician played from their own home, with the performance being assembled live in real time.
It was a powerful demonstration of his dedication to the unifying force of music—a force that can connect people across borders.
In many conversations, it became clear that Leslie and I share a thoughtful and nuanced perspective on today’s world, which has led to many fascinating discussions.
I look forward to many more of those conversations in the future.
Always a pleasure, Leslie.
