When Studio Headphones Last 20 Years

Studio operators are a special breed.

They tend to remain loyal to proven equipment and often continue using the same gear for many years—even when it already shows clear signs of age.

Reliability matters more than novelty in professional environments, and if something works well, it often stays in service for decades.

A PRO-550 Finds Its Way Into the Museum

Recently, **Leslie Mandoki—known among other things for the project **Mandoki Soulmates—returned one of our PRO-550 headphones to us with the simple comment that he no longer needed it.

After nearly 20 years of studio use, the headphone had certainly earned its retirement.

We cleaned and polished the still fully functional unit and decided to give it a place in our ULTRASONE museum collection.

For a piece of studio equipment, that is a pretty honorable second life.

A PROline 2500 Gets a Second Life

Another story unfolded with a PROline 2500.

Its owner, a studio operator, had already attempted several repairs himself before finally contacting us. The decisive moment came when the headphone cable was accidentally run over by a chair.

The headphone dates back to 2005, meaning it celebrates its 20th anniversary in studio service this year.

That seemed like the perfect reason to give it some well-deserved attention.

After replacing several key components, the headphone is now ready for many more years of work:

  • a new headband

  • new ear pads

  • new head padding

  • a new cable

With these updates, the PROline 2500 is once again prepared for the next 20 years of studio duty.

How Many Headphones Survive 20 Years in a Studio?

Let’s be honest.

How many headphones can survive two decades of professional studio use?

Studio environments are far tougher on equipment than normal listening at home. Headphones are worn for hours every day, handled constantly, and exposed to demanding working conditions.

Besides ULTRASONE, I can think of only one other brand capable of such longevity. But whether those manufacturers still repair models that old is another question.

For us, however, the loyalty of our users is always a great source of pride. And we are happy to support them whenever possible.

Of course, in this case buying a Signature FUSION OB would also have been a perfectly reasonable option.

My Personal Perspective

Naturally, I enjoy selling new headphones.

But there is something deeply satisfying about bringing older devices back to life and restoring them to their former glory. In terms of sustainability, it’s a wonderful feeling to extend the life of a product instead of replacing it.

That’s why over the Easter period we are presenting three examples of headphones that have been revived and prepared for a long future.

Of course, modern products are technically better than models from 20 years ago—otherwise something would be wrong.

But the build quality of ULTRASONE headphones from that era is still remarkably impressive today.

By the way: we often have these “old heroes” available in our manufactory for purchase.

So if you are interested, feel free to contact us—it’s definitely worth asking. 🎧
