It has been a while—more than 20 years by now—and it was at the IFA in Berlin. Back then it was still a trade fair that attracted thousands of people and drew them into the colorful world of technology, captivating and enchanting them.

At that time I was still relatively inexperienced in dealing with other competitors, so I was somewhat surprised when two gentlemen from Sennheiser appeared at our booth. Dressed in fine suits and only subtly indicating their company affiliation, they did not greet me but instead approached our stand with the words: “So this is supposed to be better than everything else?”

Of course, they had not yet listened to the products, and just as clearly they had no idea how S-Logic works. But instead of asking with genuine interest, they approached us with complete arrogance. The listening test brought the first moment of disillusionment. “That doesn’t sound bad at all.”

When I suggested that we would be happy to do a direct listening comparison with the Sennheiser products, the two of them replied almost in unison: “That’s not possible—we can’t connect headphones at our booth.” A pity, because then they might have been able to hear the differences even more clearly.

What was very amusing afterward was that it felt as if the entire Sennheiser trade show team visited our booth over the following days of the exhibition to get a look at their competitor.
