No, a brand does not have to follow every market trend. In fact, it can often be beneficial for brands to follow trends selectively—or even deliberately choose not to follow them at all.

A brand should preserve its core values and identity, because customers prefer authentic brands that do not constantly change direction at every opportunity. Trends that do not align with the brand’s fundamental values or its target audience can damage the brand image and create confusion among customers. Sennheiser, for example, demonstrated this very clearly with its shift from a professional and high-end provider toward the mass market.

Trends are often short-lived, and adapting to every trend can consume resources that would be better invested in long-term strategies. Excessive adaptation to trends can threaten brand stability and lead to an inconsistent brand perception.

A brand that focuses too heavily on short-term trends risks alienating its core audience—customers who value the brand precisely because of its consistency and distinct focus. Trends should therefore always be evaluated in terms of whether they are relevant to the target audience and provide genuine added value.

Not following every trend can also help differentiate a brand from its competitors. Some brands gain a strong competitive advantage by focusing on proven, timeless qualities rather than constantly chasing the latest developments.

Following market trends can also be expensive—whether through product development, marketing, or training. By selectively deciding which trends to pursue, brands can optimize resources and focus on developing sustainable and innovative products.

My opinion on this:

ULTRASONE has consciously chosen not to follow certain trends. When the first wireless headphones and early Bluetooth models appeared on the market, we did not introduce any products because the sound quality did not meet our expectations.

When everyone was rushing toward in-ear headphones, we also took a long time before presenting such a product—simply because it could not easily be combined with our S-Logic technology.
