Admittedly, the question of whether brands such as Sony, Apple, or Sennheiser are needed when it comes to headphones is somewhat provocative—and of course the same question could be asked about any other brand.

In reality, the question is more about whether one pair of headphones is enough, or whether you need several pairs from one or different brands.

Whether you need multiple different headphones depends strongly on your personal needs, lifestyle, and specific use cases.

Some people use different headphones for different activities. For example, over-ear headphones might be ideal at home for listening to music or watching movies, while in-ear headphones may be more practical for commuting or sports.

Audiophiles who value the highest sound quality may prefer specialized headphones for particular music genres or types of media. Good over-ear headphones, for example, usually provide a better listening experience than on-ear or in-ear headphones.

Finally, some people may simply want different headphones for different outfits or occasions, much like shoes or watches.

My opinion on this:

When I think about this question, I always remember the thousands of consultations I have had with customers of all kinds.

My first question is always what they actually want to do with the headphones and what kind of music they listen to. This quickly helps narrow down what might be suitable.

And in 99% of these conversations, at some point the following sentence appears:
“You don’t drive a Ferrari into the forest, and you don’t take a Land Rover onto the racetrack.”

This illustrates the situation very clearly: one pair of headphones is usually not enough. One for sports, one for traveling, one for the office, and perhaps separate ones for acoustic and electronic music—that might be a realistic setup.

Of course, there are people looking for the eight-seat Polo with a 2,000 km range and a 3,000-liter trunk and then decide on the best compromise. There is nothing wrong with that. We also have products such as the Signature FUSION for users like this, which covers many areas very well. But it is neither an Edition 15, nor a Founders Series, nor a Signature PURE. And anyone who only chooses one pair of headphones will miss the highlights of the technology that demonstrate what is acoustically possible.

Personally, I would find that a pity.
