Headphones with head-tracking technology are designed to create an immersive audio experience. The technology works—but is the effect really what users want? Here is what is being promised:

The new Beyerdynamic Aventho 300 headphones are equipped with Dolby Atmos and head-tracking technology. Through this combination, the sound adjusts to the listener’s head movements, which can be particularly impressive when watching movies or playing dynamic games. They also offer up to 50 hours of battery life and advanced noise cancelling for clear listening even in noisy environments.

The Sonos Ace is equipped with Dolby Atmos and advanced head-tracking technology to create an immersive sound environment. The sound remains in a realistic position regardless of how the user moves their head. This feature is especially popular for movies and gaming, as it simulates a multidimensional sound field.

The Baseus Bowie 30 Max headphones also offer head-tracking combined with spatial audio for a three-dimensional listening experience. Equipped with gyroscopes and accelerometers, the sound adapts to head movement and aims to deliver a “cinema-like” audio quality. In addition, they offer noise cancelling and long battery life.

Head-tracking headphones aim to immerse the user in a realistic sound environment—ideal for films and games where dynamic audio adjustments can be particularly impressive.

So much for the promises.

My opinion on this:

What works impressively with VR headsets or 360-degree video does not necessarily produce the same effect when sitting in front of a television or a computer screen. The technology and its implementation may be impressive, but when measured against actual demand and everyday use, I would clearly describe this as a case of over-engineering.

Just because something is technically possible does not necessarily mean it is needed in practice.
