With headphones, a distinction is primarily made between unbalanced, symmetrical, and balanced audio connection types.
An unbalanced connection refers to three-pole connectors (TRS) that transmit the audio signals for the right and left channels along with a shared ground. This is the case with most headphones that have a single-sided cable connection. These devices generally cannot be upgraded to balanced audio.
A symmetrical setup refers to the identical routing of the right and left channels using a Y-shaped cable, which separates the channels from the split point onward but still uses TRS connectors at the device end. With this type of connection, an upgrade to balanced audio is almost always possible.
There are several approaches to balanced audio, which are primarily used in the field of high-fidelity audio to ensure a clean and distortion-free listening experience.
A balanced audio output uses two signal paths with opposite polarity (positive and negative), allowing for improved noise rejection. This is particularly useful with longer cables, such as those used with headphones in studio environments and high-end audio applications.
Balanced wiring minimizes interference and ensures a clear, clean signal, making the sound appear more neutral and precise. It also reduces the risk of ground loops and signal noise.
However, these connections are more expensive and require specialized equipment—such as a compatible amplifier and suitable cables with TRRS connectors—to fully benefit from their advantages.
Sony and ULTRASONE are now taking a new approach by combining a single-sided cable connection with a balanced setup in order to further promote the adoption of this superior connection type.
In this case, a balanced cable with a 4.4 mm TRRRS plug—the so-called Pentaconn connector—is used, which enables balanced operation thanks to its special internal wiring.
My opinion on this:
It was about time. After ULTRASONE already offered a balanced option for professionals via XLR nearly 20 years ago, it was only a matter of time. Sony and ULTRASONE are now bringing to market, at the same time, what many audio enthusiasts have long dreamed of.
The difference is so significant that all ULTRASONE headphones will offer this option in the future.
