In general, customers place greater value on the technical quality of headphones than on their color, especially when it comes to sound quality, comfort, and additional features such as noise cancelling. The technology is crucial for the overall user experience, and particularly with more expensive headphones, customers expect high-quality materials, long battery life, and excellent audio performance.

Many customers—especially audiophiles—pay close attention to clear and balanced sound reproduction and value features such as active noise cancellation or special audio codecs that enable low-loss wireless transmission.

For over-ear headphones, the design is particularly important for long listening sessions, and ease of use—such as wireless connectivity or multipoint Bluetooth support—also plays a role. Especially with wireless models, this has become a key factor for many customers.

But why do Sony and many other manufacturers offer their headphones in different colors?

Color is an important factor for certain target groups. Brands like Beats have demonstrated that design and color can strengthen brand loyalty and establish headphones as a fashion accessory. Customers who view headphones as a lifestyle product often value attractive aesthetics and a wide range of color options—usually in combination with good technical performance.

My opinion on this:

Since seeing in Japan how people stand in front of shelves filled with countless headphones in every color of the rainbow and choose devices based on the color of their phone or other accessories, I have become less certain about what truly drives customers. Beats has also reinforced these doubts.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. With the arrival of noise-cancelling headphones, an appreciation for technology has returned—though not necessarily yet for sound quality. However, I am confident that this will come as well.

We ourselves experimented with colors more than 20 years ago. The blue PROLine, the brown HFI-2200, and later the edition 8 JULIA were highlights in an otherwise rather monotonous market.
