Music has a unique power to connect people around the world because it contains universal elements that transcend language, cultural, and social boundaries.

Music can express emotions such as joy, sadness, love, or fear in a way that requires no translation. Emotional reactions to music are often intuitive and deep, regardless of the language someone speaks or the culture they come from.

Music is made of sound, melody, rhythm, and harmony—elements that are universally understood. Even without lyrics or sung words, people can perceive and react to the mood or meaning of a piece of music.

While every culture has its own musical traditions, many forms of music are based on similar fundamental principles such as rhythm, melody, and harmony. These shared foundations allow people from different cultures to enjoy and appreciate music from other parts of the world.

Music also has a direct effect on the body. Rhythms encourage us to move or dance, melodies touch our emotions, and certain sounds can trigger physical reactions. This creates a sense of connection and shared experience—even among people who do not share a language or cultural background.

Concerts, festivals, and religious ceremonies where music plays a central role foster a feeling of community. These collective experiences create a strong sense of belonging and togetherness. When people sing, dance, or simply listen together, a powerful connection is formed.

Music can express the identity of a culture while still being accessible and meaningful to people outside that culture. Listeners can appreciate the beauty and significance of music from other traditions, which encourages mutual understanding and cultural exchange.

Music without lyrics—such as classical or electronic music—can unite people regardless of their native language. Everyone can enjoy the sound and structure without relying on words.

Music can also provide comfort, reduce stress, and spread joy. Music therapy is used worldwide to help people with physical, emotional, or mental challenges, demonstrating the universal healing power of music.

Music connects people because it is a universal form of expression deeply rooted in our shared human experience. It transcends language and cultural barriers, creates collective experiences, and brings people together—whether in joy, sadness, love, or hope. In both its simplicity and complexity, music speaks to us on a fundamental emotional level and creates a powerful bond between people.

My opinion on this:

Throughout my life I have often experienced—both actively and passively—how global and universal music truly is. A woman from Korea listens to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and begins to cry, even though she does not understand the text and has not had it explained to her. Joy spreads from one person to another, even when the music is completely new to the listener and comes from a different cultural background.

This unifying power of music is, for me—and hopefully also for many others in the industry, for example at companies like Sony or HiFiMAN—one of the great motivations and the reason why the music industry continues to inspire me again and again.

Without music, the world would be a much poorer place. 🎶
