Whether open-back or closed-back headphones will dominate among music lovers largely depends on individual preferences and usage scenarios. Both types have specific strengths and weaknesses that make them better suited for different users and environments.

Open-back headphones offer a natural and comfortable sound reproduction and can reduce listening fatigue during long sessions. They are ideal for quiet environments where the best sound quality can be enjoyed without external disturbances.

However, because they provide little or no sound isolation, environmental noise can interfere with listening, and the music can also leak out to the surroundings.

Closed-back headphones, on the other hand, provide good passive noise isolation, effectively blocking outside noise. This makes them ideal for listening in noisy environments such as public transport or offices. They also ensure a more private listening experience, as very little sound escapes to the outside.

Depending on the design, however, they can lead to increased listening fatigue because they place more pressure on the ears and are generally less breathable.

With the increasing use of active noise cancelling (ANC) in headphones, the market has clearly moved toward closed designs. However, Sony recently introduced the Sony MDR-MV1, which—together with the Ultrasone Signature Fusion Open Back—is currently creating a lot of attention in Japan. Could this signal a renewed trend toward open headphones?

My opinion on this:

Since we at ULTRASONE offer both a closed Fusion and an open Fusion, the comparison is relatively easy to make, and one general observation about sound can be made:

The open headphone is the more comfortable solution for long listening sessions. If a closed headphone is not required, the open version is a very good option.

We designed the open Fusion with softer, larger ear pads and less clamping force to further increase comfort. Of course, the closed version delivers a more powerful and impactful sound, especially in the bass range. But if you do not need that constantly, the open version is an excellent choice.

The ideal solution, of course, is to have both types of headphones and choose the best one depending on mood, situation, and the music you are listening to.

  • For acoustic or classical music → open headphones

  • For electronic music such as rock, pop, rap, or hip-hop → closed headphones

That way you always get the best listening experience. 🎧
