Listening fatigue, also known as “hearing fatigue,” is a phenomenon that can occur during prolonged use of audio devices such as headphones or gaming headsets. With consoles like the PlayStation 5, but also with other consoles or audio sources, listening fatigue can reduce the enjoyment of use—or even make it impossible.
There are many factors that can contribute to listening fatigue, such as high listening volumes over extended periods, headsets with poor sound quality or an unbalanced frequency response, high sound pressure directly on the eardrum, active noise cancelling (ANC), which in some cases can create a slight pressure sensation in the ear, and of course the overall duration of use.
Listening fatigue is therefore an important issue, and it is worth paying attention to the right technology in order to keep the experience comfortable.
However, there is another significant factor in listening fatigue when using headphones or headsets. This factor has been known for almost 40 years and is nevertheless largely ignored—except by S-LOGIC technology.
To understand this, it is helpful to look more closely at how human hearing works.
The hearing process in humans can be divided into three components.
First comes frequency response and volume. In this area, many devices on the market perform well. Good sound quality is certainly possible.
Second comes directional perception, which is ensured by differences in the arrival time of sound signals between the two ears. Here, the quality of the recording is the decisive factor.
The third component is distance perception, which completes natural hearing. Distance is determined almost exclusively in the outer ear, specifically in the pinna. However, this function—known as HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function)—is rarely taken into account in headphones and headsets. As a result, the brain’s hearing center tries to reconstruct the natural listening impression afterward. This leads to the loss of some of the signal information and causes the listener to need a break after about 25–35 minutes because the brain becomes fatigued.
My opinion on this:
It is unfortunate when long listening sessions—especially in gaming—are disturbed by these effects. The only technology that effectively and demonstrably prevents this is S-LOGIC from ULTRASONE. Only here is the sound directed toward the pinna in such a way that the brain no longer has to perform additional calculations. And it works with the individual ear of each user.
Try it yourself—you will be surprised.
That is why thousands of users around the world rely on our technology and are enthusiastic about it.
