When Even the Screws Are Bent – Repairing an Edition 8 from 2008
We recently encountered a repair case unlike anything we had seen before.
When we began working on an early ULTRASONE Edition 8 from 2008, we quickly noticed something unusual: the ear cups were loose—not because the screws were missing, but because the screws themselves had actually bent.
And that was only the beginning.
Not only were the screws deformed, the headband itself was permanently warped, and even the Mu-metal shielding beneath the ear pads showed visible dents.
Clearly, this headphone had lived a very active life.
Bringing a Classic Back to Life
One hallmark of a truly good product is that it can be repaired.
After a visit to our manufactory, the heavily used Edition 8 now looks remarkably refreshed. With several key components replaced, it is ready for many more years of listening:
new headband
new ear pads
new cable
After the refurbishment, this classic headphone is once again prepared for at least another 15 years of use.
A Sound Comparison Across Generations
However, during the sound check after the repair, something became very clear.
Compared with our current ULTRASONE Founders Series Closed, the Edition 8 reveals just how far headphone technology has evolved.
The Edition 8 was—and still is—an excellent headphone.
But today’s sound is clearly two generations ahead.
Both the spatial presentation and the immersive listening experience have improved significantly. The tonal character also benefits greatly from the new driver technology and updated tuning used in the Founders Series.
Refurbishing: Rare in the Headphone Industry
Refurbishment services for older products are surprisingly rare in the headphone world.
For example, I was unable to find similar long-term repair offerings from companies such as **Sony. Other manufacturers also rarely service devices that are more than a few years old.
In some ways, that is understandable.
Maintaining repair services for very old products requires:
long-term availability of spare parts
preserved technical know-how
additional operational costs
This situation is quite similar to classic cars, where manufacturers must maintain specialized expertise to keep older vehicles running.
For us, however, offering this kind of service is something we are quite proud of.
My Personal Perspective
Personally, I truly enjoy helping people preserve the devices they love.
Many owners feel a strong connection to their audio “classics”, and it is rewarding to see these products restored and returned to active use.
In fact, we sometimes advise customers not to modify or heavily alter well-preserved luxury models, because there is a remarkable second-hand market for rare ULTRASONE headphones—especially in Asia.
In some cases, collectors even pay prices above the original retail value for rare or particularly well-maintained examples.
So in situations like this, owning an ULTRASONE headphone can be not only sustainable, but sometimes even economically rewarding.
And that, in my opinion, is a very satisfying combination. 🎧
