Sony WH‑1000XM5 made a real splash: AI combined with headphones. A very exciting concept.
The AI in the Sony WH-1000XM5 performs several functions intended to improve both audio quality and usability.
For example, AI supports adaptive noise cancelling by analyzing environmental noise and adjusting the noise-cancelling algorithms to provide the best possible isolation. This happens in real time depending on the surroundings (for example busy streets or quiet rooms).
In addition, AI-supported sensors detect whether you are walking, sitting, running, or traveling in a vehicle, and adjust the level of noise cancelling accordingly. The idea is to optimize the listening experience for different situations.
AI is also used for personalized sound reproduction, analyzing your ear shape and listening habits to create a more immersive listening experience. It also enables seamless integration with voice assistants such as Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, making it easier to control the headphones.
By combining several microphones with intelligent algorithms, the AI also aims to improve voice clarity during calls by filtering out surrounding noise.
Instead of a manual “talk-through” function, the headphones can automatically recognize conversations and adjust the sound so that you can hear the discussion without removing the headphones (the Speak-to-Chat function).
Finally, AI also optimizes energy consumption by analyzing usage patterns and managing battery usage more efficiently to maximize runtime.
My opinion on this:
These are undoubtedly impressive approaches that are being pursued with considerable effort.
For me, sound optimization and immersion are fundamentally based on the right acoustic design, but the other approaches are certainly interesting. I do have some reservations about the talk-through function.
I have already had the opportunity to test the headphones and listen to feedback from a user. As expected, the user was pleased overall—but she noticed virtually no difference in the AI functions compared with the previous model.
I felt the same way and of course hope from a technical perspective that AI may first need to learn before its effects become noticeable. Nevertheless, considering the considerable effort and the many good ideas, the question arises whether too little real impact is being promoted with a great deal of marketing.
I will definitely continue to observe this topic closely.
