The development of dynamic headphones began in the late 1960s and 1970s, when demand for high-quality sound in home and studio environments increased. During this time, brands such as Sennheiser, Sony, and Beyerdynamic began producing dynamic headphones known for their high level of sound fidelity.
The transition to “luxury headphones” in the modern sense came later, around the 2000s, as the market for high-fidelity (HiFi) products and personalized audio technology expanded.
In 2003, ULTRASONE introduced the world’s first dynamic luxury headphone in the price class above €1,000. The edition 7 limited made a major impact on the market, clearly distinguishing itself from everything else available at the time—both in its choice of materials and features, as well as in its sound quality.
At €2,690, the edition 7 limited was by far the most expensive dynamic headphone on the market and was positioned as a true luxury product. At comparable prices, only electrostatic headphones, such as those from Stax, were available.
It took five years and two ULTRASONE model generations before Sennheiser introduced the HD 800 in 2008, priced at €1,299, which became the first competitor in this segment.
During the 2010s, brands such as Denon, HiFiMAN, Audeze, and later Focal introduced models that used sophisticated materials and technologies—such as planar magnetic drivers—to deliver exceptional sound quality and luxurious build standards.
Today’s class of dynamic luxury headphones relies on advanced driver technologies, premium materials, and precision manufacturing. These products are aimed at demanding users and audiophiles who are willing to invest in headphones that go far beyond standard consumer models.
My opinion on this:
It is good and important that a luxury class of headphones exists—but it should truly be luxury. Nowadays, it is sometimes enough simply to call a product “luxury.” For me, however, bent sheet-metal parts will never represent true luxury.
Exclusivity, craftsmanship, elaborate manufacturing, proprietary technologies, high-end accessories, and noble materials—that is what makes something truly luxurious.
And only then can the high prices that are being asked truly be justified.
Luxury always represents the maximum that is technically and artistically possible. 🎧
