Durability Matters: A DJ Story About Headphones and Sustainability
Internationally renowned DJ Richie Hawtin used to perform with Sony MDR-7506 headphones in the early years of his career.
After our US distributor introduced us, we quickly discovered that we got along very well. During one of our conversations, Richie mentioned a recurring problem: due to the way he used his headphones during performances, the headband of the Sony MDR-7506 would often break. In fact, he needed a new pair for almost every show—or at best one per week.
We suggested that he try the ULTRASONE DJ1 instead.
The DJ1 was slightly more expensive than the Sony model, but I was confident that it would last at least ten times longer. The ULTRASONE DJ1 is a closed-back headphone featuring S-Logic technology, specifically designed for DJs and known for its robust construction and high sound quality.
It can also be considered the ancestor of today’s Signature PURE.
Richie immediately liked both the sound and the build quality and began using the DJ1 regularly. After some time, however, I noticed that I had not heard anything from him and wondered how our headphones were performing in his demanding DJ environment.
About 18 months later, we met again. I asked him how things were going with the DJ1.
He looked slightly surprised and asked why I would even ask such a question—because the headphones were still in use in completely original condition, with all parts unchanged.
When I asked him how many Sony MDR-7506 headphones he estimated he would have used during that same period, his answer was:
“About 100.”
That would have meant not only USD 11,500 in headphone costs, but also a considerable amount of electronic waste and frustration.
In contrast, the ULTRASONE DJ1 cost just USD 149 and proved to be the better solution in every way.

A lifespan that is 100 times longer than the market leader of that time is a strong argument—not only for economic efficiency but also for sustainability.
